Human Society and Its Environment

Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) is the key learning area where students gain an enhanced understanding of past, present and future.

Through the study of HSIE children learn to participate in maintaining and improving the quality of their society and environment.

The subjects incorporated into HSIE are:

History – historical concepts and skills

The study of history from K-6 investigates the actions, motives and lifestyles of people over time, from individuals and family members, to local communities, expanding to national history contexts.

Geography – geographical concepts, tools and inquiry skills

Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environment.

Through these strands enable students to become active, responsible and informed citizens able to evaluate the opinions of other and express their own ideas and arguments. HSIE is often integrated with relevant Religious Education, Science or English topics.

In HSIE, students develop skills of identifying and gathering information, historical inquiry, critical thinking, mapping, presenting information and participating with others.
