Transition to School Program
Helping children feel confident, connected and excited to learn
Starting school is a significant milestone for every child and family. At St Gerard’s Carlingford, our Transition to School Program is designed to make the first steps into Kindergarten positive, engaging and confidence-building.
Through a combination of playgroups, parent information sessions and official transition days, children become familiar with their new school environment, teachers and classmates before their first day of Kindergarten even begins.
Why a smooth transition matters
A positive start to school sets the foundation for future learning and wellbeing. Research from the NSW Department of Education shows that children who experience a successful transition to school are more likely to engage fully in learning and enjoy school life.
Our Transition to School Program supports this important beginning by providing a structured, nurturing and fun environment where children can build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging.
Transition Playgroups
Learn, play and explore together
In 2026, we will host three themed playgroups, led by specialist teachers offering hands-on learning experiences designed especially for young children.
Across the playgroups, children enjoy:
-
STEAM activities, including simple science experiments and robot programming
-
Music and movement sessions
-
Sport and gross-motor play
-
Visits to the library and canteen
These experiences help children prepare for school routines, practise social skills and build confidence in a warm, inclusive setting.
All families in our community are welcome to attend the playgroups, not only those enrolled at St Gerard’s for Kindergarten 2027.
Parent Information Night
Supporting families every step of the way
Our Parent Information Night, held in October, is designed for families of enrolled Kindergarten 2027 students.
This session provides:
-
Clear guidance on what to expect in Kindergarten
-
Information about routines, learning and wellbeing
-
Practical tips to help your child feel ready and confident
Families leave feeling informed, supported and reassured as they prepare for this exciting next chapter.
Official Transition to School Sessions
Building confidence before day one
In November 2026, enrolled Kindergarten 2027 students are invited to attend three consecutive Transition to School sessions with our Kindergarten teachers.
These sessions are carefully structured to support both children and parents:
Session 1
Parents join their child in the classroom to explore the learning space together.
Session 2
Children spend time in the classroom with teachers, while parents attend a Starting School information session.
Session 3
Children meet their Year 6 buddies for the following year, while parents enjoy morning tea and connect with other families.
A confident start to Kindergarten
Through our Transition to School Program, children and families:
